New Apprentices Join The Fight Against Cyber-crime

The NDA is placing apprentices at the heart of the nuclear decommissioning industry to help protect against cyber-attacks.

This is the first programme of its kind for the NDA. It is an important step in ensuring the sector is developing the right skills to tackle the increasing threat from across the globe.

9 apprentices have been placed at 5 of the NDA’s businesses across the UK as well as with the UK Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC).

Bill Taylor from the NDA said:

Cyber is one of the greatest security related challenges we face, something that has been recognised by UK government and our regulators.

Having high calibre people with the right skills to tackle this 21st century threat is crucial.

Our apprentices will join the existing cohort of cyber experts who will play a vital role in protecting our national security.

Adware Installs InfoStealer Trojan that Loads Via Chrome DLL Hijacking

Researchers have discovered that the “AdService” trojan is being distributed by threat actors via adware bundles. This Trojan performs Dynamic Link Library (DLL) hijacking in Chrome web browsers.

AdService is capable of stealing passwords for online accounts such as Facebook and Twitter.

Affected Platforms:

Chrome web browsers – all versions

  • All applications should be carefully researched prior to installing on a personal or work system.
  • All applications should only be downloaded from trusted vendors.
  • Always choose the custom installation as it is more likely to disclose other applications being installed.
  • Check the installer is from the author’s website and not a third party installer.
  • Ensure anti-virus is always kept up to date.

VMware Host Code Execution Vulnerabilities

VMware has released a security advisory document that includes three flaws that can be exploited by a malicious attacker to launch attacks against a number of VMware products.

The most severe relates to an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in super video graphics array. For this vulnerability to be exploited an attacker would need to gain low-level privileges on the guest Virtual Machine (VM).

The second vulnerability is a denial of service (DoS) type where an attacker with an unprivileged account on a guest operating system (OS) can cause the virtual environment to crash.

The final vulnerability is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw.  This can be used as a privilege escalation attack.

Affected Platforms:

ESXi 5.5
ESXi 6.0
ESXi 6.5
vCenter Server 5.5
vCenter Server 6.0
vCenter Server 6.5
Fusion 8.x
Workstation 12.x

  • Ensure patches are applied at the earliest available opportunity. Prioritise deployments where untrusted guests OS are in use.
  • Where untrusted guests OS are in use, consider additional segregation from core network services.

ElasticSearch POS Malware

During August 2017, it was discovered that a number of ElasticSearch servers had been hijacked to host Point of Sale (PoS) malware. 99% of servers infected are hosted in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Two strains of malware have been detected on the servers, AlinaPOS and JackPOS. These two malware strains are very popular among attackers and have been in the wild since 2012.

AlinaPoS is used to scrape Credit Card data from Point of Sale (PoS) software. JackPOS is another PoS malware, which gathers credit card information. It then uses command-and-control (C2) to exfiltrate the stolen credit card data. JackPOS also uses its C2 to remove itself or download and install an updated copy of itself.

Over 16,000 ElasticSearch servers have been discovered which were configured with no authentication. Each infected ElasticSearch server became a part of a larger PoS botnet.

Affected Platforms:

  • Secure configuration of servers should be implemented, ensuring a strong password is used
  • Regularly monitor log files, connections and traffic to open ports and close all ports that are not used.
  • Reimage all compromised systems.
  • Users should consider the Security Logstash product included in the X-pack add-on.  Security allows users to add authentication, authorisation and encryption to the ElasticSearch system.

Hong Kong To Host Technology Festival For Cutting-edge British Businesses

International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, today announced that UK will host a festival showcasing the best of British innovation in Hong Kong.

The UK government will host a GREAT Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong to showcase the power of UK innovation and technology to the world, International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox today announced (21 September).

The festival in March 2018 will show how new technology could change the way we work, learn and play in the future. It will also provide a fantastic opportunity for the very best British and Asian innovators to create new trade links and strengthen existing relationships with hundreds of international business leaders and investors.

The GREAT Festival of Innovation reflects the unique partnership between the UK government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and is part of the globally-recognised GREAT Britain campaign, which promotes the UK as one of the best places in the world to visit, invest and do business.

Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong, is visiting London to mark 20 years since the former British territory was handed over to the People’s Republic of China.

Last night she joined the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, at a gala dinner attended by 600 UK and Hong Kong business people where a new FinTech Bridge agreement was unveiled. This will allow UK firms and investors to expand in Hong Kong and pave the way for more investment from the region into UK markets.

The UK is currently recognised as one of the leading places in the world to start and grow a FinTech business, with the industry adding £7 billion to the UK economy every year and employing 60,000 people.

FinTech Bridge agreements help companies to obtain regulatory authorisation, set up new offices and strengthen trading relationships between jurisdictions while creating a better standard of financial services for everyone to use.

During her visit the Ms Lam also met with First Minister Damian Green to discuss matters that the UK and Hong Kong will work together on in the future.

International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, said:

The UK is a global centre for technology and innovation, attracting more investment than any other European country.

As an international economic department, we will build on this success. The GREAT Festival of Innovation will promote the UK’s unique technological abilities, and create fantastic new opportunities for British businesses to sell their products and expertise to the world.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said:

This landmark FinTech Bridge will pool British and Hong Kong expertise in this innovative sector, allowing our firms to access the capital, talent, accelerators, and start-up facilities needed to succeed in both the UK and in Hong Kong.

These developments will bring Britain and Hong Kong closer together and will promote jobs and prosperity.

Damian Green, First Secretary of State and Minister for the Cabinet Office said:

There is a deep, historic connection between Hong Kong and the UK which has led to strong cultural and trade ties. Hong Kong has seen a lot of change in the last few decades and I am pleased that we have been able to work together throughout this time.

I was delighted to meet Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam today to build on this relationship and further deliver on the government’s commitment to support an ever more outward-looking global Britain.

Hong Kong Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, said:

I am glad to note that our multi-faceted exchange with the UK will be given further impetus, with the UK government set to host the GREAT Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong next March, showcasing the UK power of innovation and technology. I am sure that the Campaign will bring us even closer in all respects.

The GREAT festival announcement came as Trade Policy Minister, Greg Hands, spoke at the Think Asia, Think Hong Kong conference at the QEII Centre in London emphasising the strength of relationship between the UK and Hong Kong as trade between the 2 booms.

Total bilateral trade between the UK and Hong Kong reached £17.3 billion last year, an increase of 4% on 2015.

The majority of this came in the form of British exports, with electrical machinery, financial services and mechanical appliances among the goods and services in highest demand.

One of the sponsors of the festival will be HSBC, whose UK Chief Executive Ian Stuart said:

We at HSBC are delighted to be part of the forthcoming GREAT Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong, the gateway to Asia.

For over 150 years we’ve been helping innovative businesses to thrive in both the UK and Hong Kong. Looking ahead, we’re excited by the opportunity this festival presents for our customers to create a new era of trade and investment partnerships.

Fox/Sky Deal Referred To CMA For In Depth Investigation

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has referred Fox’s proposed takeover of Sky to CMA on public interest grounds.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will now examine how the deal would impact media plurality and broadcasting standards in the UK.

Media plurality means that a diversity of independent views about news and current affairs is available from the media. It also means that one person or group does not have too much influence over public opinion and the political agenda.

Broadcasting standards are set out in the Communications Act 2003 and apply to programmes broadcast on television and radio in the UK. They include: reporting the news with accuracy and impartiality, and ensuring harmful or offensive material is not broadcast on radio and tv.

Anne Lambert, Panel Chair, said:

The Competition and Markets Authority is the regulatory body for mergers in the UK and can be called upon to look at mergers affecting the public interest.

We have experience investigating different issues in a wide range of sectors, from publishing to hospitals and even defence.

We will use that same evidence-based approach to thoroughly and impartially investigate the proposed takeover of Sky Plc by 21st Century Fox on the public interest grounds of media plurality and a genuine commitment to broadcasting standards. Once the investigation is complete we will report back to Karen Bradley for her to make a final decision.

The CMA has appointed an investigation group, which is responsible for providing the Culture Secretary with the CMA’s final report. This will be chaired by Anne Lambert. The other panel members are Sarah Chambers, John Krumins and Tim Tutton. All the appointees are chosen from the CMA’s expert independent panel members, who come from a variety of backgrounds including telecommunications, business, economics and law.

A timetable for the 6-month investigation will be published shortly on the merger investigation page. This will set out all steps and provisional deadlines until the final report, including the timeline for submissions from third parties.
