When the Wii launched is was nigh on impossible to get hold of one. No wonder. A quarter of Brits own one. Nintendo today announced that it has sold six million of the consoles in the UK alone. Nintendo’s white box of motion sensor tricks broke through the six million barrier last week. And with just under three years gone since its December 8th, 2006 release the Wii has become the “fastest selling console in UK history.”
Nintendo UK boss David Yarnton is certainly chuffed about it all.
“”With its inclusive, family-friendly and fun nature, we’re very pleased Wii seems to have captured the imagination of over six million families across the UK and reached such a landmark sales figure in such a short space of time.”
Despite its popularity Nintendo has been accused of ignoring the ‘hardcore’ gamer in favour of going after those who’ve never played a game in their life, something Nintendo’s trying to put right.
During E3 Nintendo announced a selection of new games for those that have stayed loyal to Nintendo with titles such as the recently released
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the upcoming
Metroid M and
Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo fans will also be looking out for the secretive new
Wii Zelda, which could be given the big unveil next June.
Yarnton hopes interest in the Wii will continue for years to come.
“We’ll work even harder to ensure that the interest in Wii stretches over months and years, appealing to people of all ages and gaming experience,” he said.
