coturn TURN Administrator Web Portal SQL Injection Vulnerability [CVE-2018-4056]

CVE Number – CVE-2018-4056

A vulnerability in the administrator web portal feature of coturn Traversal Using Relay NAT (TURN) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to conduct an SQL injection attack on a targeted system. The vulnerability exists because the affected software does not sufficiently validate login messages. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting a malicious username in a POST request to a login page that is designed to return an arbitrary password. An exploit could allow the attacker to gain access to the targeted TURN server administrator web portal, which the attacker could use to conduct further attacks.Proof-of-concept (PoC) code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is publicly available. The coturn TURN server project has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.

Analysis

  • TURN servers are typically deployed as public-facing systems in Internet accessible DMZs. The exposed network position of these systems could allow an attacker to access the external user interface without additional restrictions.Cisco Talos has released a vulnerability report at the following link: TALOS-2018-0730

Safeguards

  • Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.Administrators are advised to run both firewall and antivirus applications to minimize the potential of inbound and outbound threats.Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.Administrators can help protect affected systems from external attacks by using a solid firewall strategy.Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
