Drupal File Module Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability [CVE-2019-6341]

CVE Number – CVE-2019-6341

A vulnerability in File module/subsystem of Drupal could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to conduct a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack against a targeted system.The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied data within the File module/subsystem of the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by uploading a malicious file to the affected system. If successful, the attacker could execute an XSS attack, which could be used to obtain sensitive information from the targeted system. Drupal.org has confirmed this vulnerability and released software updates.

Analysis

  • An attacker must have user-level access and have network access to the targeted system and be able to craft a malicious file in order to initiate a XSS attack to be successful.  These requirements could lower the possibility of executing a successful attack against a vulnerable system.

Safeguards

  • Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.    
    Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.    
    Administrators are advised to run both firewall and antivirus applications to minimize the potential of inbound and outbound threats.    
    Administrators may consider using IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.    
    Administrators can help protect affected systems from external attacks by using a solid firewall strategy.    
    Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
