Apple is close to buying the music recognition app Shazam for about $400m (£300m), media reports say. The deal could allow Apple to integrate a popular consumer feature directly into its iPhones at a time when Apple’s innovation crown is under threat from Google and Samsung.
Shazam is a UK company that was founded in 1999, allows people to use their smartphone or computer to identify and buy music through a snippet of sound.
They are based in London and has created a database of more than 11 million “acoustic fingerprints” that it uses to identify songs. Shazam connects more than 1 billion people. It took them 10 years to reach 1 billion tags, 10 months to reach 2 billion, 3 months to go from 10 to 12 billion.
