Ransomware attack halts regional Covid vaccination appointments
On early Sunday morning the Lazio region in Italy suffered a reported ransomware attack that has disabled the region’s IT systems, including the COVID-19 vaccination registration portal.
The attack has encrypted almost every file in its data centre and disrupted its IT network, leading to severe delays for vaccination appointments.
In June, Italy instituted a new ‘Green Pass’ certificate system that allows people to prove that they have been vaccinated.
A massive surge in registrations since the announcement of the Green Pass policy has raised concerns that the disruption to the online COVID-19 vaccination portal will have wider consequences for the region.
Sources have told BleepingComputer that the cyber attack on Lazio was conducted by a ransomware operation known as RansomEXX.
