w3m formUpdateBuffer NULL Pointer Dereference Vulnerability [CVE-2018-6197]

CVE Number – CVE-2018-6197

A vulnerability in the formUpdateBuffer function of w3m could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on a targeted system.

The vulnerability is due to a NULL pointer dereference condition that exists in the formUpdateBufferfunction, as defined in the form.c source code file of the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a request that submits malicious input to the targeted system. A successful exploit could cause a segmentation fault, resulting in a DoS condition. 

Proof-of-concept (PoC) code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is publicly available. 

w3m has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.

  • To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must send a request that submits malicious input to the targeted system, making exploitation more difficult in environments that restrict network access from untrusted sources.
