Product Review – EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard (Free)
Let’s start by saying that with the free version you can restore up to 500MB (or 2GB if you click the “Share” button in the wizard – see below) there is no limitations on the free version with what file types you can restore.
If you need to restore above 2GB then you need to upgrade to the PRO version, there is an option on the top bar to do this once you have installed the free version. As with any software I would recommend that you familiarize yourself with the software before you upgrade.
As someone who has worked in IT for over 20 years I am aware of this software, and I have used previous versions of it over the years. So before I even came to review it i knew it worked, and that EaseUS had been around for a very long time, 15 years now !
The download is very quick and easy and for me the big plus is the fact that I didn’t have to fill in a registration form just to download the free version, which is something which puts me off some free software.
Once you have installed the software it’s interface is very easy to understand, but if your having trouble don’t worry, you can follow our guide below, or follow the instructions on the EaseUS website (here).
One thing to note is that you cant restore to the original file location, this isn’t really a big issue for me, because like most people you will just be glad you can restore the file, then once you checked its ok you can move it after.
During our testing we restored some files from the Recycle Bin and a general folder on a PC, all files restored ok. The Recycle Bin did show us thousands of very old files that had been deleted some time ago, but some of the older ones could not be restored, but the ones we did restore were a few months old.
Generally speaking most people need to restore files that has been recently deleted or become corrupted and this software is ideal for that. You also may have been hit with a virus or malware or have suspected hard disk damage, again this software can restore all types of files.
Obviously the longer back you go the less chance there is of restoring the data, this is the same with any data recovery software.
The requirements to run and install the software are very low, so it will work on almost all machines, you need about 50MB free space, 128MB RAM and an x86 CPU. I know from using previous versions of this software I have had it running fine on some very old PC’s and laptops.
The software will work on any operating system from Windows XP upwards, a wide range of file systems are supported such as FAT(FAT12,FAT16,FAT32), exFAT, NTFS, NTFS5, ext2/ext3, HFS+ and ReFS.
This is one of the best data recovery programs available, it is a must have for any IT engineer, or individual who needs to restore their files.
As with all our reviews we test the software the best we can, we report on any positive and negative points we find, with this software there isn’t really any negative points. It does exactly what it says, in a quick and easy manor, this is probably because this software has been around for years and they have acted on any feedback from users to made it work the best it can.
After reviewing this product in detail it definitely gets 5 stars.
You can download the software from :-
Before you download the software ensure that you are downloading it from the official EaseUS website (use the above link)
The download is quick and easy, no need for registration etc, just click the “Free Download” link and you a prompted to download the exe file which will be the latest version. The downloaded file size is small apx 1.5MB. We checked the file and it was valid, by a verified publisher and had a valid file signature etc.
Click the downloaded exe file and it will start the install process, first of all you are prompted with a standard message with and “Install Now” option or you can select “Custom Install”, selecting “Custom Install” enables you to change the language and installation path.
To install the program you will need internet connectivity as the program downloads the remaining installation files. The install is quick and easy, it will install the required files and look for any required updates, then load the application ready for you to use.
Using the software
Once you have installed the software, and you click “Start” you are promoted with a simple interface (see image below) from here you can select what drive or location you wish to scan for files to recover. It’s quite easy to figure out, you can scan an entire drive, folder or the “Recycle Bin”.
From the main screen select a drive, folder or “Recycle Bin” to scan and click the scan button.
Depending on the amount of data to scan, and the speed of your machine this can take various amounts of time to scan. Personally my opinion with these type of scans is the longer it takes the better, as it means it has done an in depth scan of the required location.
As this scan is in progress, the remaining time, and an indication of the files scanned etc is shown in the bottom left.
Once the scan is complete you will see a list of files you can restore, select the required files and click “Recover” in the bottom right. Once you do this you are asked where you want to save the files, so create a folder where they can be restored to.
Please note: DO NOT save the files back onto the same hard drive partition or external device where you lost the data from.
You can also right click a file to preview the file, or use the preview options (top right)
Once you have selected where to restore the files to, it will then restore them. Depending how much data there is to restore will impact how longs this takes, in our example it was only a few files about 20MB and this took a matter of seconds.
If you now navigate to the folder where you have restored the files to, they should be there as expected.
Upgrade from 500MB to 2GB recovery – FREE
With the free version by default you can restore up to 500MB, or up to 2GB if you click the “Share” button in the wizard. This is quick and easy to do once you are in the application just select the “Share” button (next to the trolley symbol) and away you go !
The version we tested was EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free 12.9.1 – PC Version – as with any software new versions are out all the time and the updates often include better functionality, bug fixes and updates. Please ensure you install the latest version.
