Major Plusnet outage caused by suspected DNS issues

A major outage was reported tonight by thousands of Plusnet customers in the UK (13-09-2023). Over 20000 users reported that they had no internet access via the reporting website downdetector.co.uk

The outage started apx 8.30pm and was resolved around 10pm

Users took to social media to raise there concerns, during the downtime there was no updates from Plusnet on their social media pages.

Many technical users found the problem to be related to Plusnet DNS servers, as soon as the DNS server settings on the local machine or router were changed to something else the connection was working again.

DNS is a system that converts domain names into IP addresses, which allow web browsers to get to websites and other internet resources.

We await further updates from Plusnet to confirm what caused tonight’s outage.

  • Looks like other major UK broadband providers experienced problems at the same time, including BT, Virgin, Sky, Talk Talk, etc. Perhaps this was an attack https://downdetector.co.uk/telecom/
