Amazon Web Services to cut hundreds of jobs

Amazon has revealed layoffs that will impact hundreds of employees in its cloud computing sector. The company stated that the most recent layoffs will affect numerous positions in sales, marketing, and global services, as well as several positions within its physical stores technology team.

Amazon announced that the reductions will occur across its global operations, with the bulk of the affected roles in its headquarters of Seattle. The company assured its US-based employees of at least 60 days’ pay and benefits, assistance in securing alternative employment, access to transitional health benefits, and eligibility for severance pay.

Amazon has been directing its attention toward artificial intelligence (AI) through AWS, recently making investments in safety and research startup Anthropic just last month. Major players in the tech industry, such as Microsoft, which has invested in ChatGPT, are actively engaged in a competitive race to enhance their AI capabilities.

“These decisions are difficult but necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimize resources to deliver innovation for our customers”, an AWS spokesperson told the BBC.
