Apple to endorse the utilization of authentic second-hand parts by independent repair experts

Apple has updated its repair protocols within its Self Service Repair program to enable consumers and independent repair providers to incorporate components from donor devices that are compatible with the repaired item. The calibration of these parts will commence this autumn, with measures in place to prevent the use of parts from lost or stolen devices. This revised procedure aims to enhance product durability and reduce the environmental footprint of repairs. Recycled authentic Apple parts offer the same functionality and security as new genuine Apple components.

The term “pairing” refers to the process of verifying the authenticity of a repair part and gathering relevant information about it. According to Apple, this step is crucial for safeguarding the privacy and security of the iPhone. Under the new policy, security-sensitive components such as Face ID and Touch ID sensors can undergo calibration after the part has been installed.

Future iPhone releases will incorporate support for recycled biometric sensors. Customers and service providers will no longer be required to furnish a device’s serial number when ordering parts from the Self Service Repair Store for repairs not involving the replacement of the logic board.

Additionally, Apple will expand its Activation Lock feature to encompass iPhone parts, dissuading the disassembly of stolen iPhones for spare parts. Originally designed to prevent the reactivation of lost or stolen iPhones, this feature will now restrict calibration capabilities for any supported part detected as originating from a device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled during repair.

Apple emphasized: “With the increasing longevity of devices, it’s crucial for second or third owners to have access to comprehensive part and repair histories. Through the Parts and Service history, accessible within Settings on iOS, Apple stands as the sole smartphone company providing transparent information to owners regarding their device’s repair history and the parts utilized. This autumn, Apple will further enhance Parts and Service History to indicate whether a part is new or recycled genuine Apple hardware.

“This forthcoming improvement to Apple’s repair procedures underscores the company’s ongoing dedication to enhancing access to safe and economical repairs.

Self Service Repair, introduced two years ago, grants access to manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools used at Apple Store and Apple Authorized Service Provider locations. It encompasses 40 Apple products across 33 countries and regions, available in 24 languages.

Over the past five years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training, now exceeding 10,000 Independent Repair Providers and Apple Authorized Service Providers.
