Finland detains suspected Russian ship and interrogates crew after electrical and telecoms cables were damaged under the sea
Authorities in the Gulf of Finland are continuing a joint operation following multiple cable ruptures in the Baltic Sea on Christmas Day, December 25th 2024. The investigation, launched on that day, involves a range of actions and will proceed as long as necessary to support the criminal inquiry.
Superintendent Heikki Porola of the Helsinki Police Department stated, “The operation concerning the Gulf of Finland events will continue for several more days.”
The operation is being led by the Helsinki Police Department, with support from the Border Guard Service. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is overseeing the criminal investigation into the ruptured cables. The suspected offenses include aggravated criminal mischief and aggravated interference with communications, the latter being formally reported on December 28th 2024. The ruptures are believed to meet the criteria for the offense of aggravated interference with communications, though charges could evolve as the investigation progresses.
The NBI has conducted further investigative measures including questioning crew members of the tanker Eagle S. The questioning aims to establish a clear understanding of events aboard the vessel, carried out in cooperation with the crew.
Detective Chief Inspector Elina Katajamäki of the NBI confirmed, “The authorities have ensured the maintenance of both the vessel and its crew during the investigation.”
A report from the shipping publication Lloyd’s List claims that the Eagle S previously carried “abnormal” equipment, which a source suspected was used to monitor NATO naval and aircraft radio communications and to deploy sensor-like devices in the English Channel.
Additionally, devices linked to the ship’s navigation have been seized, and their data is currently under analysis.
