Storm Goretti now so dangerous people in the UK are about to get emergency alert on their phones

The Met Office in the UK has announced an uncommon red weather warning as Storm Goretti brings exceptionally strong winds.

Forecasters have cautioned that “dangerous, storm-force winds” could reach speeds of up to 100mph, strengthening quickly and posing a serious risk to life from flying debris. The red warning is in effect for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly between 4pm and 11pm on 8th January 2026.

A UK Cabinet Office spokesman said: ‘In light of the damaging winds and associated disruption, the Cabinet Office is issuing two Emergency Alerts to people in affected areas. The first was sent at approximately 3pm on Thursday January 8 to people in the Isles of Scilly. The second will be sent at approximately 5pm on Thursday January 8 to people in Cornwall. The Emergency Alert system will send a message to every compatible mobile phone in the impacted areas, containing information about the red warning and guidance on how to stay safe.’

Mass weather alerts sent directly to phones are uncommon in the UK, with only four issued to date. The most recent alert was sent last year during Storm Eowyn, reaching around 4.5 million people across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
