The History of Sky Satellite TV

Sky Satellite TV has played a huge role in transforming television in the United Kingdom and across Europe. From the early days of analogue satellite broadcasting in the late 1980s to today’s high-definition, streaming and connected-TV services, Sky has been at the centre of some of the biggest changes in television technology.

The story of Sky is one of ambitious satellite broadcasting, fierce competition, technological innovation, subscription television and the gradual move from traditional broadcasting to on-demand entertainment.

The Beginnings of Satellite Television

Before Sky arrived, British television was dominated by terrestrial broadcasters such as the BBC and ITV. Channel 4 launched in 1982, and Channel 5 would eventually arrive in 1997.

Nevertheless, satellite technology is unlikely to disappear overnight.

Millions of existing Sky customers still use satellite equipment, and satellite remains an efficient way of distributing large amounts of television content.

The future is therefore likely to involve a mixture of technologies.
