UK and Germany to strengthen science and research ties

The UK government has unveiled a new pact aimed at enhancing scientific and research collaboration with Germany. This agreement entails a mutual commitment to share opportunities in various research and development domains, encompassing quantum, artificial intelligence, and clean technology.

Under this initiative, esteemed organizations such as the Royal Society, The Max-Planck Society, and the Helmholtz Association will forge deeper research connections as outlined in the plan. Currently, Germany stands as the UK’s second-largest research partner, trailing only the United States. Both nations are actively engaged in global ventures like CERN and the European Space Agency.

German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “The United Kingdom, with its exceptional research institutions, universities, and companies, is one of Germany’s key partners. In the face of contemporary challenges, it is imperative that we advance together and lay the groundwork for joint research solutions.” She further expressed that the exchange of views, coupled with the engagement of the science communities in both countries, marks only the commencement of a collaborative effort. Stark-Watzinger highlighted that the Joint Declaration of Intent serves as the foundation for fostering robust and close cooperation to fortify science and research initiatives.
